[ what's this? ]
Smoky quartz is a relative of amethyst and citrine, occurring in shades of grey – brown. Its color is the result of irradiating quartz crystals – sometimes this irradiation
occurs to the crystal naturally, in the earth, but most often is done by humans to intentionally manipulate and achieve this color. It is a popular semi-precious stone in fashion jewelry and traditional Scottish jewelry. The crystals are often very large – nice, well cut strong-colored stones can be had very affordably. Smoky Quartz occurs in many localities around the world including Russia, China, Northern Europe, southern Africa and the USA. Natural smoky quartz is always found in igneous rock – the volcanic activity creating the possibility of natural irradiation.
