The Translucence of Jade and How it Affects its Value
The Value of a piece of Jade is strongly affected by its translucence, that is, how transparent the stone is. Some jade is totally opaque -it looks like a dull rock and it does not hold any light inside it. Jade is never totally transparent as, for example glass is. The best jade is translucent: it looks solid but seams to glow with life.

| Opaque: No light glows from within this jadeite cabochon. If it had at least some translucense, its value might increase 3 times. | Some Transluscence: This jadeite jade cabochon shows some more translucence than the one before: we can see pockets inside the stone where it holds light, but it is not very much and it is not throughout the whole stone. | Glowing: This jade illustrates what we mean by “glowing”, it is not transparent, but it holds the light in a subtle way that permeates the whole stone. | Nearly transparent: Jade like this is almost never seen. It is so transparent, we can almost see through it. Jadeite like this is appreciated as phenomenal. |
