The meaning and symbology of amethyst is one of spiritual contentment.  It helps to strengthen the connection and communication between the mind, body, spirit and other worlds. It is very beneficial as a stone of protection because it neutralizes negative energy.  Amethyst gemstones also assist people to become more flexible and adopt new ideas more easily.

Folklore and Mythology of Amethyst

In Ancient Greece, amethysts were believed to ward off the effects of drunkenness and were worn as amulets by inexperienced drinkers.  This is how the stone got its name - from the Greek "amethusos" meaning "not drunk". 

Amethyst is an excellent stone for providing protection and was one of the stones worn by the High Priest Aaron in the breastplate that protected against injury. In Greek lore, the goddess Diana turned a nymph lady into an amethyst out of jealousy because she was loved by  Bacchus, the god of wine.  Bacchus, in despair, then poured wine over the statue, embuing it with its purple color.

Amethyst is considered helpful in heightening the spiritual connection and is always used in "The Bishop's Ring," worn by officials of the Catholic Church on the right hand.

It is the birthstone for February. 

Healing Properties of Amethyst

Amethyst is excellent in warding off addictions and has a traditional use in protecting the body from toxic substances.  Amethyst is also used to treat ailments of the heart, stomach, skin, teeth,  and nervous system.  It is used to treat hearing disorders and to help the skeletal system (for example, to correct posture).  Amethyst is helpful in eliminating the pain from headaches.  It has been very successful in the treatment of arthritis and mental illness.
